Drug & Alcohol Services
OARS Community Transitions has a number of services to support clients to reduce drug and/or alcohol intake and improve their lifestyles.
- Drug Counselling Service - Illicit Drug Intervention Program
OARS SA has been providing quality drug counselling for the past five years with the introduction of the Illicit Drug intervention Program (IDIP). The program is funded by the National Illicit Drug Strategy and is now well positioned to meet the needs of clients whose lives have been adversely affected by drug use. IDIP offers an holistic drug counselling service, which takes into account the complexity of the issues that clients face when they present for counselling. The team is centrally located in the city office, with outreach services to Christies Beach and Murray Bridge.
How to make contact with the service:
Referrals can be made directly to the service
Contact the city office on 8218-0700 to speak to a counsellor or to make an appointment
- Police Youth Drug Diversion Program
The Youth Program offers early intervention to assist in diverting young people with drug and alcohol issues from the criminal justice system. It has an holistic and systems approach in addressing the issues which impact on the young person and their families. The aim of the program is to offer an alternative to punitive measures and reduce offending and/or incarceration amongst this client group. The program reports a high percentage of clients with the primary drug/s being cannabis, amphetamines and/or alcohol. The main issues that clients are seeking assistance with are accommodation, alcohol and other drugs and mental health.
The Youth Program has a unique ability to provide comorbidity interventions specific to young people.
- Amphetamine Type Stimulants Program
This is a program funded by the Department of Health and Ageing to better respond to the Amphetamine related needs of clients. As a component of the program, a relapse prevention group will be trailed incorporating lifestyle experiential sessions.
The CoMorbidity Project is funded through the Department of Health and Ageing. This has seen OARS services build capacity to better respond to the comorbidity needs of clients. For example, during 2009/2010:
- The Comorbidity Project, in collaboration with the Alcohol & Other Drugs (AOD) sector in South Australia, was responsible for introducing Comorbidity Training from Victoria into the sector. There is scope for this training to be sustainable both within the organisation and the AOD sector.
- Through the Comorbidity Project staff skills levels have increased from an average of 40% when the project first commenced to approximately 70% in the last six monthly skills audit.
